         Mr. George Bessell, of 13 Mann-street, Invermay, died yesterday at the age of 89 years. He joined the railway service in the days of the old Launceston and Western Railway Company when a broad gauge line of 5ft. 3in. existed between Launceston and Deloraine. For a time he was on the station staff at Longford, and later was promoted to the position of station master at Hagley. Mr. Bessell was 'also station master at Lilydale before his retirement from the rail way service some years ago. He was a foundation member of the Dorset Masonic Lodge, Scottsdale. At least four of Mr. Bessell's sons have been in the railway service. They are Mr. C. H. Bessell, who recently retired from the position of transport superintendent at Launceston, Mr. A. II. Bessell, at present station mas :.,r at Hobart, Mr. E. J. Bessell, of he Launceston locomotive staff, and the late Mr. Frank Bessell, a former station master in many parts of the state. Mr. George Bessell's wife died some years ago.
