 Japanese Carpenter Bee
Japanese Carpenter Bee

This large (approx 2.5cm) carpenter bee was claiming a flowering cherry tree at the Glover Garden in Nagasaki as its own. This means it was ignoring the many visitors to the garden, but furiously bonking any other carpenter bee that came too close.

The Glover Garden includes a museum and the oldest Western-style house in Japan. The house and gardens were built for Thomas Blake Glover a Scottish migrant who helped found industrial giant Mitsubishi. The museum in the gardens has considerable information about Mitsubishi's history in Nagasaki, including a panel on Hashima Island which unfortunately omits all references to the infamy of that mine. Korean visitors have left their thoughts about those omissions in their Google reviews.
