Ovation of the Seas - August 2024
I took this photo from the port side of the Black Ball Line ferry from Port Angeles, Washington, USA, to Victoria, BC,
Canada. Ovation of the Seas is one of a class of cruise ships that are fourth largest in the world. This time of year it cruises out of Seattle, and
was underway to Victoria. There can be well over 4,000 passengers and around 1,300 crew on an Ovation sailing.
In the background are the rapidly
retreating glaciers of the Olympic National Park.
The strange cloud formation over the Ovation was a mixture of Pacific marine layer, firesmoke from the raging wildfires
in the Pacific Northwest, and the various gasses that are in the exhaust of its massive marine diesel engines.
Other than belching huge amounts CO2 that contribute to global heating, Ovation is infamous for attempting to dock in
Australia at the very start of the COVID-19 pandemic with numerous infected
passengers and crew.
