George Town became a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 7 July 2008. The developers have nibbled away at the outskirts with bland concrete high-rises and generic and half-empty malls, but the core town area still looks roughly the same as 40 years ago, a bit of grit now with some gentrification (spot the urban art in this image).

The adhan still rings out simultaneously from multiple minarets around town several times each day. Alas, the streets are now choked with cars thanks to the addition of the two bridges to the mainland, the Penang Bridge in 1985, and the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge in 2014.
