In all my years living in Melbourne I had never visted the Shrine of Remembrance. Back in 1971 during the Vietnam War
anti-war protesters painted the word "PEACE", one letter per column. The Canberra Times reported:
MELBOURNE, Friday. — Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance was desecrated with the word "peace" on six pillars at the main
entrance, and several peace symbols, and a police guard was bashed by four youths early today.
