Grampians National Park, 23 Feb 2024
The Pinnacle on a windy and cold day, Halls Gap in the background.
"The Grampians" was named by Thomas Mitchell (see also The Mount Dispersion massacre)
after a place in Scotland. People already living here when Europeans turned up called it Gariwerd. Back in the 1990s there
was an attempt to change the name to Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park, but that was reversed by the Kennett Government in 1992. I thought
I knew most of the
Kennett Government's trail of destruction,
but this had escaped my notice.
